Brominated vegetable oil

    [ Brominated vegetable oil, BVO ]

    Triglycerides that have been bonded with the element bromine. Brominated vegetable oil is used as an emulsifier in citrus-flavored soft drinks, preventing the flavouring from separating during distribution and storage.

    BVO has been implicated in cases of bromism associated with excessive consumption of BVO-containing soft drinks. While its use has been banned in India, Japan and the European Union, its use as a food additive is still permitted in Canada and the US.
