Ketosis

    A metabolic state of ketogenesis, where the liver produces ketone bodies as a supplementary energy source. It is characterised by blood concentrations of ketone bodies over 0.5 millimolar, and low levels of insulin and blood glucose, usually triggered by fasting or a dietary shortage of carbohydrates.
