Omega-3 fatty acid

Any polyunsaturated fatty acid of the alpha-omega class in which there is a double bond three carbon atoms from the methyl (omega) end of the molecule.

Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are considered essential omega-3 fatty acids.

The omega-3 form of docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) is beginning to get attention by researchers to determine its roles in mammals.
