      Lactase

        Lactitol

          [ Lactitol ] A sugar alcohol with about 40% of the sweetness of sucrose and 2.4 kcal/gram of energy. Lactitol has been prescribed as a laxative and as a prebiotic.

          Lactose

                Lectin

                  [ Lectin ] Any of a class of proteins which bind specifically to certain sugars. Lectins are found in certain grains, legumes, nightshade plants and milk. Some lectins, such as ricin, are powerful toxicants.
