          Prebiotic

            [ Prebiotic ] A chemical or food ingredient that promotes the growth of beneficial intestinal microorganisms. Naturally occurring prebiotics are typically non-digestible polysaccharides or sugar alcohols that pass undigested through the upper gastrointestinal tract. Compare: Probiotic

            Prokaryote

              [ Prokaryote ] A single-celled organism which lacks membrane-bound organelles such as a nuclei or mitochondria. Bacteria are prokaryotes. Compare with eukaryote.

              Prolamin

                [ Prolamin ] A group of plant storage proteins having a high proline and glutamine content found in cereal grains. Some prolamins, notably gliadin, may be implicated in coeliac disease.
